Hempcrete

Hempcrete is a bio composite prepared by combining hemp and lime, and it is believed to have been utilized to build one of the seven wonders of the world, The Great Pyramid of Giza.

Hemp is a material with great strength and an ability to withstand extreme weather conditions. Lime, when reacted with water, acts as an excellent binder that glues with hemp contributing to higher material strength. Because of these factors, hempcrete is a material with great flexibility and strength which is becoming the most in-demand construction material in today’s world.

Unlike other construction material, the binder doesn’t fill the voids of the material. Rather, it only coats the hemp. This means that hempcrete with a lot of voids is perfectly usable, as they allow the material to breathe and help it weigh less overall. Hempcrete is only about an eighth of the weight of concrete. As such, it’s usually light enough to float in a bucket of water.

Benefits of using hempcrete include:

  • No off gassing
  • Fire and pest resistance
  • Passive self-regulation of temperature and humidity
  • Non-toxic, as it’s sourced organically
  • Its durability
  • Mold resistance
  • High vapor permeability

Its ability to act as a great insulator.
